The
Northern
Lights of
Alaska |
|
- Welcome to the Fish Wish Charters and Tours Aurora and Northern
Lights page. We will be updating this page with more photos and aurora information as this
site matures. Please book mark us now.
-
- We designed this page with one thing in mind, to entice you to come
experience one of the most mystical and spectacular events that takes place here in Alaska
- The dancing of the Northern Lights. What better place to experience them than on a fully
equipped charter vessel The Wish Maker!!
-
|
- The best time to view aurora is around the equinox (March and late
September - October) because this time of year offers the best trade-off between mild
weather and dark skies. During the summer months, night skies are not dark enough to view
aurora, and in midwinter temperatures in the -0 degree range make outdoor aurora viewing
somewhat unpleasant. Though we can't guarantee you will be able to view the Northern
Lights while on the M/V Wish Maker you will still be able
to witness some of Alaska's incredible beauty.

It is not possible to predict aurora activity very
far in advance. As solar activity increases towards the maximum in 2000-2001, the aurora
will be even less predictable, with forecasts being limited to a few days based on current
observations of solar flares and sunspots.
If you need a prediction on aurora activity We suggest that you check out the Aurora forecast maps from the
University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute.
(Inactive May-September while they bask in the sun)

The northern lights have fascinated, and often terrified, humans for
thousands of years. The people of the north who saw the aurora frequently developed many
legends and stories about it, while those who lived further south and rarely saw the
aurora thought it was a supernatural omen of war or destruction.
- It is thought by folk lore if you conceive a child while under the
northern lights, your child will be a prodigy like Mozart.
- Folk lore also has said: That if you whistle and sing to the aurora
it will come down and take you. Incidentally there will be no
whistling while onboard the M/V Wish Maker.
- As people began to seek more natural explanations for the aurora,
they came up with many theories: reflected firelight from the edge of the world, sunlight
reflected from the arctic ice, or maybe reflected by ice crystals high in the sky. It
wasn't until the 20th century that people finally began to make headway in the study of
the aurora, and there are still many unanswered questions about it.
